voor het vervaardigen van tot in het detail nauwkeurige beeldjes.
Is dus plastic/steen mengsel -- Alabastrite = acrylic/resin.

ONYX / ONYX MARMER

Onyx is ook een agaat, maar dan de zwarte soort. In de natuur komt deze zwarte
kleur niet zoveel voor, en dat is er ook de reden van dat de meeste onyx
gebrande lichtere agaat is.
Verwarrend is het dat er ook salontafels en allerlei andere voorwerpen onder de
naam onyx worden verkocht. In dat geval gaat het niet om de halfedelsteen onyx.
Maar om onyxmarmer. De kleur daarvan is wit, gelige, groenig en lichtbruin.

SOAPSTONE

or steatite  (stē´ tīt) , metamorphic rock of which the characteristic and usually
chief mineral is talc, but which also contains varying parts of chlorite, mica,
tremolite, quartz, magnetite, and iron compounds. It is gray to green in color,
has a soapy feel, and is notable for its high degree of resistance to acids and
heat. It is so soft that it can be easily cut with a knife or other sharp tool,
making it a popular material for sculpting. The chief deposits of commercial
importance are in the United States, Norway, and Canada. It is used in the
manufacture of laboratory table tops, kitchen sinks, laundry tubs, furnace

De westerse walvisvaarders, voornamelijk uit de Verenigde Staten en Engeland,
doodden hun tijd op de lange thuisreis met het maken van allerlei 'prullaria',
zoals scheepjes in flessen of ook ingekerfde voorstellingen in vooral potvistand.
Dergelijke bewerkte tanden - waarbij uiteraard vooral scheepjes of vrouwen als
thema werden gekozen - zijn bekend onder de naam scrimshaw.
Na thuiskomst, of ook onderweg, werden deze veelal verhandeld.
