Birdseye esdoorn is een klasse beter dan 'gewoon' esdoornhout, is compacter van structuur en
komt in variatie van kleur en uistraling. De buitenringen van de esdoornboom hebben een creme /
amber achtige kleur, doorweven met wat patronen die lijken op de ogen van een vogel.
De binnenringen van de boom hebben een donkerder kleur en neigt naar roodachtig / donker
bruin. De houtsoort is populair in de houtbewerking omdat er relatief gemakkelijk decoratieve
wandelstokken, stoelpoten, biljartkeuen etc van gemaakt kan worden. Het krast niet gemakkelijk

valuable. Woodworkers prize the timber because it "turns" well on a lathe, meaning it can be
shaped into decorative canes, chair legs, billiard cues, or handles. After it's finished, birdseye
maple doesn't scratch easily, except when used as hardwood flooring; in which case it is very
susceptible to being scratched from animal claws and human shoes alike.

écht zwart Ebbenhout bestaat alleen in sprookjes - vaak zit er een grijs veegje in.
Toch is de kleur van het hout echt niet verkeerd.
Ebben lijkt wel op het Zuid-Aziatische Coromandel en is daar zelfs aan verwant. Ebben is in het
algemeen iets donkerder dan Coromandel. Bovendien heeft Coromandel vaak wat bruine vegen.
Ebben is goed te bewerken en zeer glad af te werken. Het mooiste resultaat wordt verkregen indien
het in de was wordt gezet. Ebben komt uit kleine boompjes en is daarom alleen in kleine afmetingen
beschikbaar. Het is zeer hard, heeft een korte draad en splintert niet.
Ebben wordt gebruikt voor ornamentjes, juwelenkistjes, biljartkeuen en ook wel voor biezen in
